Dubai Police issue Dh1,000 fine warning after sudden lane change causes crash

Dubai Police have warned motorists that abrupt lane changes that endanger other road users will result in a Dh1,000 fine and four black points. The reminder came with the release of video footage showing a collision between a white car and a Toyota van, highlighting the risks of sudden swerving on busy roads.

Footage shows danger of multi-lane cuts

In the video, the white car approaches a section where traffic splits into different lanes. Rather than moving into the correct lane earlier, the driver appears to attempt crossing several lanes at once to reach the far-left side. As the car cuts across, it enters the path of the Toyota van travelling alongside. The two vehicles collide, sending the van off the road onto the grass verge.

The impact pushes the van away from the main carriageway, while the white car continues along the road. The footage illustrates how sudden lane changes, especially across multiple lanes, leave other motorists with little time or space to react.

Dubai Police urged drivers to stay in their designated lanes, check surrounding traffic and ensure sufficient space before changing direction. Sudden swerving endangers other road users and can lead to serious accidents, the force stated.

Separate incident: drowsy driving crash on Emirates Road

In a separate incident on 29 October, Dubai Police warned against driving while tired or drowsy after a truck crashed into a metal safety barrier on Emirates Road (E611). The driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.

The accident occurred on the highway after the Dubai Flyover towards Abu Dhabi. Police said the driver became drowsy, lost control of the truck and veered off the road. The vehicle struck the metal barrier before stopping off the carriageway. The driver sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment at the scene.

Brigadier Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, said fatigue can affect drivers’ concentration, alertness and ability to react quickly to unexpected situations.
