Thousands Cycle Through Dubai’s Dawn as Ride Opens Fitness Challenge

Well before sunrise on Sunday, Sheikh Zayed Road saw a different kind of traffic. Instead of lorries and commuters, cyclists of every type filled the lanes, their bells and conversations echoing between the towers.

Dubai Ride, presented by DP World, held its seventh edition on 1 November, marking the start of the Dubai Fitness Challenge. The event drew a record 40,327 participants last year, and the crowds at the starting gates suggested this year’s numbers would be close to that figure.

Early Morning Start

By 6:00am, the area near the Museum of the Future was packed with riders wearing helmets and matching club kits. The air was cool and still, with the scent of coffee hanging over warm-up playlists and the occasional marshal’s whistle.

The main route stretched 12 kilometres past the Museum of the Future, the Dubai Water Canal and the Burj Khalifa. A separate 4-kilometre family loop through Downtown offered a gentler ride for beginners and young cyclists.

Participants Share Their Motivation

For many, the appeal lay in trying something different. Mridul Pinto, 33, is a regular at Dubai Run but took part in Dubai Ride for the first time. “I wanted to try something new apart from running, and to experience what cycling looks like at Dubai Ride,” he said. “That is the reason I signed up, and I am already enjoying it.”

Russell Capital, 37, travelled from London for the ride, his first. “I love cycling. It is my thing,” he said. When asked what he hoped for, he replied: a smooth journey all the way.

John Michael Ogoc, 37, a regular at Dubai Ride, saw the morning as the start of something bigger. “I am always excited for the Dubai Fitness Challenge 30×30,” he said. The month-long initiative encourages residents to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day for 30 days, which Ogoc described as a valuable push for the fitness and wellbeing of the city’s residents.

Dress Your Ride Competition Adds Colour

This year’s edition also featured a lighter touch with the first-ever Dress Your Ride competition, which had a Dh10,000 prize pool. Riders decorated their bikes with flags, flowers and fairy lights threaded through the spokes, turning the highway into something close to a moving parade.

By 8:00am, the last riders were arriving, flushed and smiling. The road, which had been quiet and wide only hours earlier, was soon handed back to cars.

For a few early hours on a November morning, Dubai’s busiest road belonged to those who chose to ride it. Judging by the faces at the finish, many are already planning to return next year.
