The fraudulent rental scheme
Five individuals were convicted by the Dubai Criminal Court after they rented luxury cars from various agencies using valid identification, then failed to return the vehicles when the hire periods ended.
They altered registration certificates and number plates, offered the cars for rent through online platforms at reduced rates and sublet them to third parties while the original rental companies remained unaware of the vehicles’ whereabouts.
After earning money from these subleases, the group staged traffic accidents involving some of the cars and filed insurance claims, claiming compensation for the damage.
How the scam was uncovered
The investigation began when a car rental firm noticed discrepancies in its tracking system and reported several missing vehicles to the police.
Dubai Police traced the cars to underground parking facilities, where officers discovered the altered documents and arrested the suspects.
Court verdict and penalties
The defence argued that the matter was merely a breach of rental contracts and should be treated as a civil dispute, but the court rejected that view, finding that the defendants had gone beyond non‑return by falsifying official paperwork and deliberately causing collisions to pursue insurance money.
The court convicted the five expatriate defendants, imposed prison terms and financial penalties, and ordered them to jointly repay the value of the missing and damaged vehicles.
It also ruled that the defendants will be deported after they have served their sentences.
